Packaging Trends
Trends are useful only when they solve a shelf problem. Here's how we separate what sells from what only looks good on a moodboard.
Clients often ask for the trend they saw on Instagram — minimal cream packaging, oversized type, matte everything. Then the product disappears on a crowded shelf, or the finish scratches through the first delivery run.
We test the trend against distance, category and production. If the design isn't readable from two metres, doesn't say the product's category in one second, and can't survive the actual printing process, we redesign it.
Distinctiveness beats minimalism
Reduced packaging works only when the brand asset carrying it is already strong. For challengers, colour blocking, a bold mark and a clear product cue win over quiet elegance.
Sustainable materials, without downgrade
Uncoated boards, mono-material laminates and reduced ink coverage are moving fast in the region. We prototype early because these substrates shift colour dramatically versus a screen proof.
Designed for delivery, not just shelf
More products arrive in a bag than on a shelf. Packaging now has to open well on camera, protect in transit, and photograph cleanly for the app grid.
Takeaways
- Judge every trend at two metres, not on a laptop.
- Prototype on the real substrate before approving colour.
- Design the unboxing as seriously as the shelf face.
